Should I Upgrade to Microsoft 365 Business Premium?

Should I Upgrade to Microsoft 365 Business Premium?

If your firm is on Microsoft 365 Business Standard and wondering whether Business Premium is worth the difference, the short answer is yes.

Standard gives your team the apps. Premium adds the security, identity control and device management the current landscape demands, without changing how your people work.

What has actually changed

The UK Government’s Cyber Security Breaches Survey for 2025/2026 found that 43% of UK businesses identified a breach or attack in the previous 12 months, roughly 612,000 organisations.

Phishing was reported by 38%, and 69% of those affected called it the most disruptive incident they faced.

One detail is worth focusing on. Among businesses that were breached, 51% experienced phishing and nothing else, up from 45% the year before.

The way most UK firms get compromised is still a convincing email, not an exotic attack on a hardened system, which is why cyber awareness training sits alongside the technical controls rather than replacing them.

Ransomware crime doubled year on year, from under 0.5% to 1%, with around 19,000 companies facing a ransom demand.

Reported revenue loss after a breach also doubled, from 2% to 5%. Attack volume has held steady.

The cost of making a mistake has gone up, and if ransomware is the risk keeping you up at night, we have written separately on how to safeguard your business against ransomware.

Where Business Standard stops

Standard covers productivity: Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and 1TB of OneDrive per user.

What it leaves out is the layer underneath. Managing the devices your people work on, controlling who signs in and from where, protecting information once it leaves your tenants.

When most of your risk sits in inboxes and logins, that’s the gap worth closing.

What Business Premium adds

Business Premium adds Microsoft Defender for protection against phishing, ransomware and email threats, and Defender for Business for device protection.

Entra ID P1 gives you stronger identity and access control.

Intune manages laptops, mobiles, tablets and security policies across the firm.

Sensitivity labels, data loss prevention, message encryption and Purview information protection let you classify and control confidential material.

None of this changes what your team sees each morning. They open the same apps and get on with it.

The efficiency case

Security dominates most of these conversations, but it is not the only reason firms migrate over.

Instead of running separate tools for email, file sharing, security and device management, and paying for each, it all sits in one platform under one licence.

Hybrid teams get the same protections wherever they work. Setting up a new starter becomes a policy rather than an afternoon.

Adding users to a managed environment is straightforward, whereas retrofitting device management onto a firm that has already doubled in size is not.

Someone still needs to watch it

This is where firms come unstuck.

The protections are excellent, but they don’t configure themselves, and nobody at a 25-person firm has time to watch a security dashboard.

Defender will flag something at 2 am. The question is who sees it.

That is where a managed SOC and SIEM comes in.

SIEM pulls activity from your devices, cloud apps and identities into one place and highlights what looks risky.

The SOC is the team watching those signals around the clock and acting on what matters.

Our easy-to-understand guide to SOC and SIEM explains it without the jargon. Because it integrates with Defender, Entra ID and Azure, you get visibility across the programs you just paid for.
